Tendoryu-aikido is a aikido-style that was founded by Kenji Shimizu. Shimizu-sensei is a direct student of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. After the dead of the founder Shimizu left the Aikikai. Tendoryu-aikido is known for its fluent and strong movements. Fluent means here that at the moment of contact the both partners merge. This is accomplished through a cutting motion (like a sword) called "te gatana". This merge is called awasa and is meant to suck in the opponent. This causes a change of direction in the attacking-movement of the opponent where he /she will lose his/her balance. Depending on the sort of movement the techniques (wasa) involved will end with a throw or pin. (Special thanks to Sjoerd Jongerius for this information)
